William DeShields, age 78, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Taylor Hospital.  Son of the late Noah and Alberta DeShields, Bill was the ninth of ten children. He was a lifetime resident of Media, PA, and a fixture in his community. Bill attended Media Elementary School and graduated from Nether Providence High School.

He began working as a stock clerk at Martel's Super Market in Swarthmore and eventually rose the ranks to Assistant Manager.  Bill later took a job with the Middletown Township Highway Department where he became a well known road foreman eventually retiring as a supervisor after 35 years.  Over the years, Bill worked at the Thomas F. Wilson Funeral Home as well as Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home.  He was reliable, hard working and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mr. DeShields was a former member of Honeycomb Union AME Church. He enjoyed watching and discussing sports, especially football, and liked to dabble in the ponies.  In his free time, Bill visited the casinos and spent time with his family.  He will be greatly missed by his beloved nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his siblings Geraldine Johnson, Noah DeShields, Thomas DeShields, Joseph DeShields, and Louis DeShields.

He is survived by his friend and companion, Evon Frasier, and his sisters Margaret Rothwell, Barbara Bowman, Jean Moat, and Elizabeth Ann Townsend.

Mr. DeShield's funeral service will be Wednesday evening, July 10th, 7:00 pm at the Rigy Harting & Hagan Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to call from 4-7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial: Media Cemetery.
