Business Owner and Patriarch of Prominent Delco Family Dies at 91

Longtime business owner and patriarch of the Fizzano family of Delaware County, Thomas Anthony Fizzano, 91, died peacefully on August 8, 2024.  Revered by all who knew him, Fizzano's life was a vibrant mosaic of experiences and achievements, a blend of destiny and determination, commitment to family, wisdom, and compassion.

Thomas Anthony Fizzano, "Tom", was born in Leiperville, Ridley Township, Delaware County to Joseph and Carmela "Millie" Fizzano (Carzo) in 1932.  A dedicated and loving son, Tom and his younger brother, Joe, "Champ", learned the value of hard work at an early age.  They spent countless hours helping in their mother's grocery store on Miller Street in Crum Lynne, where they not only honed their business skills, but also formed a deep appreciation of community and service.

Tom's formal educational journey began at Saint Rose of Lima School, where the seeds of his remarkable spirit were first sown.  He later graduated from Ridley High School in the class of 1950 as a formidable football tackle under the legendary coach, Phil Marion. But Fizzano was more than just a player; he immersed himself in the game, mastering its intricacies and developing a deep understanding of strategy, teamwork, perseverance and work ethic.  His passion and talent propelled him forward, earning him an athletic scholarship to Pennsylvania Military College where he earned a bachelor's degree in business.  At PMC, Fizzano not only refined his football skills, but made lifelong friends on the team and cultivated his love of the sport, culminating in an unforgettable undefeated season during his final year.

Upon his graduating in 1955, Fizzano answered the call of duty, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Army.  After completing basic training, he was assigned to the 13th Infantry Regiment, and stationed in Germany, where he embraced the dual roles of Public Relations Officer and coach of the regiment's football team, the "Vicksburgers".  Tom coached several college standouts, including some players destined for professional football.  Under his guidance, the team soared to an undefeated regular season and advanced to the European Championship game.  Fizzano gained a reputation for thorough and imaginative plays and his coaching style evoked admiration and praise from his players, leaving an immeasurable impact that extended far beyond the gridiron. One of his players, Dick Syzmanski, a former All-American from Notre Dame and later Baltimore Colt, described Fizzano as a "natural leader on and off the field".

After turning down repeated entreaties from his commanding officers to dedicate his life to the military and gracefully declining recruitment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Fizzano returned to Delaware County, in 1957, where he joined a different FBI - Fizzano Brothers, Inc. – the thriving concrete block manufacturing company started by his father, Joe, and his uncles in 1935. He devoted his professional life to the success and growth of the business that evolved from a single block form mold to producing up to 80,000 masonry units per day.  Fizzano took pride when his namesake son, Tom, joined him in the 90s, continuing the family tradition.  He faithfully appeared in his office for many decades until the age of 88, when the pandemic would not allow for it.  Beloved by employees, some of whom described him as simply "the nicest man they have ever known," those who worked for him often sought his counsel in personal matters and his goodwill, knowing he would respect their confidences and offer unwavering support, assisting in any way he could.

An avid thoroughbred horse racing enthusiast, Fizzano enjoyed many seasons racing his own thoroughbreds and shared unforgettable afternoons at the races with family and friends.  His passion for the sport was rivaled only by his love for card games, where he showcased his skill and competitive spirit right up until a few weeks before his passing. Whether it was poker, blackjack or a friendly game of gin, Tom relished in the camaraderie and connections forged over each hand dealt.  Card playing became a cherished family tradition, creating bonds that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved playing with him.

Fizzano brought a quiet charm and a sophisticated presence to every gathering, effortlessly lighting up the room with his warmth.  Known for his captivating storytelling, he would enchant family and friends with tales of his life experiences over dinner at his favorite restaurants, weaving memories into narratives that left everyone spellbound.  His textured gravelly voice was iconic and unmistakable.  Fizzano spoke softly with a deep raspy tone that was both commanding and intimate, carrying an air of authority and gravitas, drawing in the listener with every word.  His voice contained a combination of weariness and wisdom, evoking well-placed respect and, sometimes, amusing inquiries as to whether or not his "Godfather"-esque sound was his "real" voice.

Tom had a keen interest in current events and politics and was a trusted confidant of friends involved in Republican leadership at the state and local levels.  Fizzano's wisdom and guidance were sought after, and his quiet but impactful influence was felt in policy decisions and campaigns, including the numerous successful local and statewide campaigns of his beloved daughter, the Honorable Christine Fizzano Cannon, now a Pennsylvania appellate court judge.

Fizzano often said that the happiest day of his life was the day he married his treasured wife of 61 years, Christine B. Fizzano (Myers).  He understood the worth of true love, recognizing that their union would open the door to countless opportunities for joy – and it surely did.  Together, they traveled the world, made lasting friendships; raised and were devoted to two wonderful loving children, Tom (Kelli) and Christine Fizzano Cannon (Mark); and experienced great happiness spending time with their five cherished grandchildren, Thomas, Mirabel, Ethan, Luke and Alexandra.

Tom inspired his children and grandchildren to embrace life with humility and tenacity and always encouraged them to uphold honor and grace. He never had any bitterness or time to criticize others and was strong in a way that nothing ever disturbed his peace of mind.  When asked to what he attributed his longevity, Fizzano pointed to his steadfast will to be here for his family, his faith that he was leading a purposeful life, and his prayerful practice of daily gratitude for the gift of another day.

Fizzano was a man who commanded great respect and admiration from all who had the pleasure of knowing him and he will be profoundly missed.  He deeply appreciated the love and support expressed by his friends and family throughout his life, which enriched his journey.   In honoring his wishes, burial and services will be privately held.  Donations can be directed to the Shriners Children's Hospital - Philadelphia ( shrinerschildrens.org ) and the Wounded Warriors Project ( support.woundedwarriorproject.org ).
