Susan "Peggy" Bennett January 11, 1938 – October 7, 2025
Susan "Peggy" Bennett, Wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 11, 1938, in Columbia, North Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of the late Polly DeElla Bryant and Henry Bryant. She was raised in the close-knit community of Gum Neck, NC, where she developed her deep sense of faith, compassion, and strength.
On April 12, 1957, Peggy married Ludie Bennett Jr., in Columbia, NC. Their union was grounded in love, family, and mutual respect. In October 1958, they welcomed their first child, Theresa Joann, In 1959, Peggy and Ludie moved to the Washington, D.C. area to build a new life. There, they raised a large and loving family, welcoming Alfreda Bennett, Ludie Bennett III, Terri Bennett, Ellery Bennett, Valerie Bennett, Devellen Bennett, and DeElla Staples (Jason).
In 1991, Peggy fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. With determination and care, she served veterans at the Veterans Hospital in Washington, D.C., until her retirement, a role she took great pride in. Her love for helping others was evident in both her work and personal life.
A woman of deep faith, Susan was a long-time member of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church in Washington, D.C., where she found spiritual nourishment and community. After relocating to Philadelphia, PA, in 2008, she joined Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, continuing to walk faithfully with God.
Peggy was known for her many talents and joyful spirit. She loved sewing and crocheting, often creating handmade gifts for family and friends. She enjoyed reading, music, and in her younger days, bowling and fishing, especially with her sister. She had a flair for cooking and baking, particularly during the holidays, when her home was filled with the smells of delicious food and the laughter of loved ones. She also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino for fun and entertainment.
She is survived by her devoted children: Alfreda, Ludie Jr., Terri, Ellery, Valerie, Devellen, and DeElla (Jason). She also leaves behind a loving legacy in her grandchildren: Shannon, Darice, Raymond Jr., Tony, LeAttris, Nakisha, Dina, Roderick, Randy, Terricka, Dewayne, Alfreda, Deonte, Lakitha, Indiria, Shana, Derrell, Quetarra, Tamar, Tiquia, Valerie, Laurinda, Tone, Carla, and Revion.
She was blessed with 51 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will deeply miss her presence and spirit.
Peggy is also survived by her loving sisters, Ruby Phelps and Joyce Bennett.
She is now reunited in eternal peace with her beloved husband Ludie Bennett Jr., her parents Polly DeElla and Henry Bryant, her daughter Theresa Joann, her sisters Carrietha, Lythia, and Catherine, her grandson Kerry, and her great-grandchildren Iyanna, Khamari, and Cailyn.
Susan "Peggy" Bennett lived a life of love, strength, and service. She will be remembered for her warm heart, deep faith, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind in her family,
Visitation will be held at Rigby, Harting & Hagan Funeral Home located at 15 E. 4th St., Media, PA 19063, on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 10am-11:00am. Service will be at 11am. Burial will follow to Lawncroft Cemetery.
