Shirley Miller
Suydam
d. Mar 3, 2022
Shirley Miller Suydam died on March 3, 2022 at Barclay Friends retirement community in West Chester. She was age 93.
Born in Media, Pennsylvania to Ephraim Joseph Murdock, Jr. and Irene McClurg, she was graduated from Media High School, Class of 1946. After raising her five children she worked for Delaware Valley Title Company for 26 years. Shirley enjoyed her work, and was known by her co-workers as someone whom could be relied on for help. Following retirement, she periodically returned to the office to clear backlogs.
In retirement, Shirley loved to travel. When she wasn't visiting her daughters and grandchildren at the Jersey Shore, she was planning her next trip to some "fun place." She met new friends on these travels and formed relationships that lasted for many years. She was an avid reader of mystery novels: "I like a good story", she would often say. An accomplished seamstress, as a young mother she made clothing and Halloween costumes for her children in addition to customizing outfits for her daughters' dolls and stuffed animals. She enjoyed flower arranging and usually had a fresh arrangement on hand to brighten the room. She was always up to the challenge of transforming everyday supermarket flowers into something special. A talented cook, Shirley loved to entertain family and friends. She amused her young children with nostalgic recipes from her childhood. Most memorable were the fried apple sandwiches.
Shirley is survived by her children, Mary Lockhart (Keith), Edward J. Miller, Susan Mayfair, Robert F. Miller and Nancy Hayman (Harry), seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Ephraim Joseph Murdock III, sister Irene Walls, first husband Joseph Louis Miller, second husband Joel Kenneth Suydam, and son-in-law Phillip Mayfair.
