Obituary

Rosemary Doyle Johnson of Glen Mills, PA passed away peacefully at her home on July 25, 2022.  She was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 6, 1932, one of nine children born to the late Joseph and Margaret (Corcoran) Doyle, who emigrated from Ballymaguigan and Bohaun, Ireland respectively, in the 1920s.  Rosemary graduated from Holy Child Academy in Sharon Hill, PA and Immaculata College, where she excelled in basketball while earning a bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1954.

Professionally, Rosemary was a pioneer in information technology, a field dominated by men in the 1950s. She began her career as a mathematician at RCA working on projects that lead to the first color television. She then worked for General Electric, initially as a mathematician.  It was with GE where she first started working as a computer programmer on a NASA contract to help solve NASA's problems with the heat shields needed to protect astronauts and capsules during their re-entry back to Earth, as was well documented in a 2016 movie, Hidden Figures, about a few women, just like Rosemary, who were early pioneers in computers and the space program.  She later worked for the University of Pennsylvania at the Van Pelt Library, implementing Penn's first computerized circulation system.  While at Penn she attended graduate classes in advanced mathematics where she was literally the only woman in the room.  After Penn, she worked in Philadelphia for a consulting firm as a systems analyst and programmer before ending her career with The Hay Group (now a subsidiary of Korn Ferry), retiring in 1992.

Rowe was an accomplished bridge player her entire life. She was involved in local politics, serving as a Republican Committeewoman in Delaware County, PA and actively campaigning for her husband, George, in his three successful elections to the Pennsylvania State Legislature. In her retirement, she volunteered and taught math at The St. Vincent Maternity for under-privileged young women and at St. Mary Magdalen School in Media. She co-founded the Havertown Chargers Soccer Team with her husband in 1968, and was a big fan of St. Joseph's University basketball and, of course, the Philadelphia "Iggles." She had a great sense of style, a keen intellect and was always up for a game of anything. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family and summers in Ocean City, NJ.

She is survived by her three children, George R. Johnson, Jr. (Judy), Mark Doyle Johnson (Kristi), and Meg Berl (Ken); her seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; her brother Joseph Doyle of Havertown, PA; and three generations of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, the Honorable George R. Johnson, four sisters and three brothers.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and the incredible staff at Maris Grove, Glen Mills, and Willow Tree Hospice, Kennett Square.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2400 N. Providence Road, Media, PA on Friday, August 5 th from 9:30-10:30am, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Interment will be at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girls Who Code ( girlswhocode.com ) or the Sisters of the Visitation ( visitationnuns.org ) 5820 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131.
