Obituary

Robert J. Long, 61, a resident of Media, PA, passed away at Muhlenberg Hospital on June 25, 2022.  He was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family.

Born in 1960 in Philadelphia to the late Theresa (née Platt) and James Long, Bob grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and was a graduate of West Catholic High School (1978).  He obtained his B.S. in Business Education from Bloomsburg University in 1985. Bob was a proud member of the Zeta Psi fraternity and was the president of the 28th Pledge Class.

He and his wife of 35 years, Betsy, lived briefly in Clifton Heights and Holmes before settling in Media where they spent the last 22 years.  Bob worked as the Vice President of Security Watch and as a production manager for Service Master, and in recent years, drove a shuttle for Colonial Parking at the Philadelphia Airport.

Playing, coaching, and watching sports were Bob's passions. He was a teammate to many as he played baseball and football at St. Barnabas primary school, West Catholic High School, and Bloomsburg University. Out of his many awards and trophies, he was most proud of his undefeated (33-0) 8 th grade baseball team at St. Barnabas in 1974. After college, he was scouted by the minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and he hit a home run at his tryout. Bob took pride in mentoring young athletes as a football and baseball coach at West Catholic, and later coached his daughter's softball team for many years. He was an avid fan of high school sports, cheered for Penn State wrestling and football, and of course, followed the Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers.

Bob was very spiritual and patriotic. He found comfort in prayer and worship. He was a member of Media Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, Middle School Sunday School teacher and volunteered with Vacation Bible School.

Bob loved his family.  They were his number one priority, and his three children were the heart and soul of his life.  He never missed the opportunity to support them in their activities including band concerts,  theater productions, wrestling tournaments, cheerleading competitions, and football, field hockey and softball games. He was their biggest (and loudest) fan.

Bob was preceded in death by his siblings Jimmy Long (Jenny), Patty Mahoney, and Terri Long-Newton (Russ).

He is survived by his wife, Betsy G. Long (née Wanamaker); children Bobby, Kelly and Alison all of Media; siblings Rosemary (Tom) Watson of Texas City, TX, David Long of Hatboro, Ginny Stackhouse of Prospect Park, and Kathy Stitt of New Johnsonville, TN.

Memorial donations can be made payable to Media Presbyterian Church,  ATTN: Bob Long Memorial Fund.  Donations will be given to the Media Food Bank and youth sports programs at Bob's alma maters.  Checks should be mailed to Media Presbyterian Church ATTN: Bob Long Memorial Fund, 30 East Baltimore Ave. Media PA 19063.

Friends and family are invited to Bob's memorial service at Media Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Jul 23rd.  Visitation from 10-11 am.  Service at 11 am.
