Raymond J. Niemiec

Raymond J. Niemiec, age 77, of Media, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in Philadelphia on August 20th, 2023, with his family by his side. He will be fondly remembered as a dedicated teacher, loving husband, and devoted father, stepfather, and grandfather.

Born on March 16th, 1946, to Joseph and Lillian Niemiec of Glen Lyon, PA, Ray graduated from Newport Township High School in 1964. He earned a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University and then continued his studies at West Chester University, earning a master's degree in education.

For much of his career, Ray taught biology and coached baseball at Upper Darby High School, where he later became the Athletic Director. His family would joke that he could not go anywhere without knowing someone tied to UDHS, connecting with former students, colleagues, and players wherever he went; at a favorite BYOB, while traveling, or somewhere in between.

After losing his first wife to cancer, Ray met Nancy Davidson (née Mulligan), who lost her first husband to cancer. They married on June 24th, 2005, and lived life to the fullest with five grown children shared between them. Known as "Djodgie" by his grandchildren, Ray always had a smile, a hug, and some quick wit waiting for them.

Ray enjoyed time fishing, keeping up with his garden, and following Philadelphia sports, especially Phillies baseball. He shared his passion for the game with those around him and enjoyed going to the ballpark with family. Ray was known to have a knack for fixing things, always tinkering and happy to lend a hand to help a neighbor or family member with a home repair.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, two sons, David R. (Jacklynn), of Philadelphia, PA, and Kevin J. (Beth) Niemiec, of Bryn Mawr, PA; three stepchildren, Christian Davidson, of Sandy, UT, Victoria (Todd) Culp, of Media, PA, and Laura Davidson of Glen Mills, PA; and ten grandchildren: Ava, Zoe, Joanna, George, Sean, Eden, Luke, Sarah, Claire and Scarlett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Sylvia Powell, and his first wife, Joanne Niemiec (née Beaston). A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church, 730 S New St., West Chester, PA, on Saturday, September 16th, 2023. Visitation will be held from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. with the service and luncheon to follow.
