Obituary

Peggy Jane Sarrett Chafin DeSantis was a singular force. She was so many things during her life. A majorette and homecoming queen, a girl in rural West Virginia dreaming of a bigger world, a model and dance instructor in NYC, wife of a prominent lawyer and politician, Marshall University undergrad, a single mother who moved North to earn her Master's degree at Temple University, a feminist before that was a word, vivacious, beautiful and strong, an audiologist/speech pathologist at Elwyn Institute, a surgeon's wife, survivor of cancer and 19 major surgeries, a hurricane of force and will, but above all things what she prized most was being a mother and grandmother.

For those that had the unique privilege of meeting Peggy, the experience of her never dimmed. Her beauty, glamour, intellect, kindness, and generosity were breathtaking. Later in her life, younger people were drawn to her for her interest in them, her experience and insight, and her safe harbor. There was little in life to prepare for the warmth of her embrace, fierceness of her loyalty, and depth of love which she gave out by the ton. Her light dazzling and her impact wide and profound. Every person, a convert to her message: "life is to be celebrated with everything in you as often as you can and if that occasion doesn't arise, you must make it".

She celebrated with purpose, as only one can that knows tragedy and loss. Her first-born child Renee, died at 6 weeks from a now curable heart condition. The struggles of life only served to give her joy's depth. She embraced life and stood resolute against its cruelties.

Peggy made life better for all she touched. A little more beautiful, a little more wonderous. A character in a novel that had come to life with a spotlight that seemed to follow her around any room. Feminine, Southern Belle, radiant. Those close gladly orbited around that sun and its warmth.

She accomplished so much and touched so many. May we all be able to say the same.

Peggy is survived by her husband Dr. Donald DeSantis, her son Lafe Derek Chafin, his wife Joey McLaughlin and her beloved grandson, Lafe Elan Chafin. Their world is dimmer now but their privilege of knowing her is everlasting. Her light continues in all she touched.
