Nancy
O'Brien
d. Apr 1, 2020
Anne C. (Nancy) O'Brien, 84, of Crum Creek Valley in Wallingford, died on April 1 at Little Flower Manor after a protracted illness. A native of Philadelphia and a 1953 graduate of Villa Maria Academy, she lived in Havertown until her marriage. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Thomas F. O'Brien; daughters Kathleen (John) Jelliffe, Anne (Jeff) Rickards, Patti (Andy) Woods, Peggy (Michael) Breidenbaugh, and Liz (Ron Whaley); sons Robert (Maureen) and Paul (Mary-Sue Tobin); and siblings Theresa Means and Joe and Jim Brumfield. She was also the mother of a stillborn child; the grandmother of Katie Renish, Jeffrey Rickards, Emily Woods, Carolyn and David Jelliffe, and the late Joey Rickards; and the great-grandmother of Arya Rickards.
After raising her family, she worked as an office manager for This End Up furniture company. She also worked for a number of years in the Trust Department of what was then the First National Bank of West Chester.
Nancy was a long-time active member of Nativity BVM parish in Media, where she served as a lector and then for many years as coordinator of the Altar Linens Society. She was a prolific knitter until macular degeneration limited her activity. She was also a prize-winning cook. Having lived abroad for five years, she developed her own specialties based on certain French, Belgian, and German dishes. She acquired a keen appreciation of the merits of Highland single-malt Scotch whiskies.
During her time abroad, Nancy became an enthusiastic traveler. After her return home, thanks to Tom's extensive frequent-flyer accounts, she came to regard first-class intercontinental travel as an ordinary activity. She traveled much of Europe from Iceland in the west to Hungary in the east. Vienna was her favorite city. Her favorite country was Ireland, where she especially enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the mountains of Connemara. In her last days, she reminisced about her visits to Cape May, Paris, Jackson Hole, Waikiki, and the village of Leenane in County Galway.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Nativity B.V.M Catholic Church in Media, PA. Friends and family may call from 10 - 11 a.m. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon.
