Obituary

Martha C. Sweeney, age 97, died peacefully at her home in Havertown with family by her side on September 14, 2024.

Martha was born to the late Martin Wydila and Bertha (née Reppi) in Kulpmont, Northumberland County on Christmas Day in 1926. She graduated from Hanheman Hospital School of Nursing and began a rewarding career as a nurse at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. Martha married the love of her life, James Sweeney, who preceded her in death in 2018 after 70 wonderful years of marriage. For over 70 years, they resided in Havertown where they raised 5 children and were members of Sacred Heart Church.

As a mother and a nurse, Martha was a natural caretaker and nurturer. She treasured time spent with her grandchildren and looked forward to celebrating holidays with her entire family. Martha enjoyed knitting, cooking, gardening and spending time at her shore house in Margate City, NJ. She was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, and especially cheered for her Eagles and Phillies.

Martha was a lover of travel. She often visited Saratoga, NY and enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, Jim. She had a great appreciation for the arts and especially enjoyed the Philadelphia Orchestra and shows and concerts at the Kimmel Center.

In addition to her husband, Martha was preceded in death by two beloved grandchildren Leah Atkinson and Sean Sweeney.

She is survived by children Michael Sweeney (Maureen) of Cinnaminson, NJ, Patricia Atkinson (Henry) of Aston, PA, James Sweeney II of Havertown, Robert Sweeney of Havertown, and Susan Marino (Jerry) of Margate, NJ. Blessed with 13 grandchildren and survived by 11, Michael Atkinson, Rachael McClure (Sean), Erin Rossell (Jimmy), Meaghan Keenan (Sean), Matthew Marino, Hannah Marino, James Sweeney III, Maeve Sweeney, Patrick Sweeney, Tyler Sweeney, and Shannon Sweeney. 6 great-grandchildren, Rylan Sweeney, Madison Keenan, Logan Keenan, Harrison McClure, Evelyn McClure, and Laine Rossell. Also survived by sisters Cornelia Terry of Henderson, NC and Dorothy White of Basking Ridge, NJ.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Havertown on Saturday, September 28th. Visitation from 9-10:30 am and mass at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
