FLANAGAN, MARGUERITE PATRICIA (nee Hernon), 92, of Collegeville, PA, and formerly of Berwyn, PA, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, August 25. She is survived by her children Joan McCarthy (Ned), Patricia Cieri (Tony), and Richard Flanagan (Laura). She was predeceased by her husband Richard "Dick" Flanagan, her son Thomas Flanagan (Jean), and her brother Andrew Hernon. She is also survived by three siblings, James Hernon, Nona Cortina, and Marilyn Derungs, and seven grandchildren: Will McCarthy, Isabella Cieri, Grace Cieri, Molly McCarthy, Gavin Flanagan, Taegan Flanagan, and Christine Cieri.
Pat was born on April 9, 1927 in the Jackson Heights section of New York City. She was a graduate of Forest Hills High School, earned her bachelor's degree in English from Queens College, and her master's degree in Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University. She worked her way through college and graduate school as a tour guide at Rockefeller Center, after graduation taught in a New York City high school, and later worked in the human resources department of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC).
She married in 1957 and moved to Tokyo, Japan, where she and her husband Dick welcomed two daughters. The family returned to the States in 1961, moving first to San Francisco, then settled in Berwyn, Pennsylvania in 1965 where they welcomed their two sons and remained for the next 48 years. While raising her family, Pat was an active member of the Orton Dyslexia Society and returned to teaching full time in 1977, ultimately teaching English as a second language at Upper Merion High School. Most recently, she lived with her daughter Patty's family in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
Pat was a wise and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, friend, and mentor who could always be counted on to provide support and thoughtful counsel. She stayed sharp and engaged to the very end as she read her daily New York Times, enjoyed revisiting favorite books, and reveled in discussing politics and sharing memories with family and friends near and far.
