Obituary

Karol Diane Bock, of Swarthmore, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, at the age of 70, surrounded by family, after a courageous nine-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in Rochester, New York, to Karl and Irma. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University at Buffalo and later completed her MBA. Early in her career, she worked as the residency director of homes supporting individuals with mental disabilities and later with the deaf community. She went on to become the Senior Economic Development Specialist for the revitalization of downtown Rochester—a role in which she took great pride. Karol met Eric Schaff in 1985; they married in 1990 and welcomed their child, Alex Schaff, in 1994. In 2007, the family moved to Swarthmore, where Karol became a vibrant part of the community.

She was actively involved with the Scott Arboretum, the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, and led the Swarthmore Dinner Group. She loved gardening, knitting, pottery, and traveling. Her curiosity about other cultures led her to study Spanish and Japanese in addition to her fluency in English and American Sign Language. She was an extraordinary host—warm, witty, and able to talk with anyone about anything.

She is dearly loved by many, especially her husband, son, extended family from near and far, and her wide circle of friends from the worlds of pottery, knitting, skiing, and community life in Swarthmore. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who brought smiles, meals, flowers, and companionship during her final days.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, with light refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scott Arboretum , the Community Arts Center in Wallingford , and the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church —three places that brought Karol joy and connection.
