Obituary

Joyce Marie Cornog Powell
January 12, 1936 – November 01, 2026

Joyce Powell, age 90, died quietly in her sleep at Wesley Enhanced Living on November 01, 2026, after a short illness. Joyce was the eldest of two children of Harold and Olive Cornog.

Joyce was born in Media and lived her entire life in Media and Upper Providence. She attended Sandy Bank School from kindergarten through 7th grade, then Media High School from 8th grade through 12th grade, graduating in June 1953. She served as class secretary, a color guard member of the band, the lead in the junior play “You Can’t Take It With You,” and organized annual class reunions.

She worked as a secretary at Sun Oil Company in Philadelphia and met her husband, Edward Powell, there. They were married in June 1958. She had two children, Edward Jr. and Sandy, then returned to work at the Rose Tree Media School District, first in the Academically Talented Program, and then as the assistant to the Superintendent. Finally, she worked as the Secretary to the Principal at Strath Haven High School until her retirement in 1999.

Joyce was very active in the Media Women’s Club and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs for 10 years, including serving as president. For many years, she enjoyed playing bridge with friends every month.

Joyce loved to travel with her family and visited many wonderful places in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. Joyce and Ed became part of a wonderful group of friends early in their marriage, mostly from Roberts Road; they took several cruises with this group and spent every New Year’s Eve with them for a long time. This group also celebrated family milestones and went on day trips together. She loved going to yard sales and flea markets with Sandy to look for little treasures. Most of all, she loved her family deeply.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Edward Powell; her mother, Olive Simpson Cornog Packer; her father, Harold Cornog; and her stepfather, Joseph Packer.

Joyce is survived by her sister, Yvonne West Kuc, her son, Ed Jr., and her daughter, Sandy.

She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, and mother and will be missed more than words can express.

The funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home, 15 E. Fourth St., Media, PA 19063. Friends may call from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
