Obituary

Joyce Sarah Alice Mathues was born on November 8, 1928 in South Whitehall, Lehigh County to the late Alta & Theodore Knauss.   Joyce was the wife of Charles Mathues who passed away on March 17, 2019.   Joyce was big sister to Lucille & husband James, Richard (deceased), Bruce & Bobbi (deceased) and Theodore & wife Bonnie. She is survived by numerous nieces & nephews and their families whom she adored.  Always an industrious & astute person she began her extremely active and fulfilling life as a ride attendant at the Dorney Park Amusement Park.

She graduated from Emmaus High School.  She then graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University where she met her future husband of 67 years.  Joyce had a keen interest in science, which led her to a life long employment with Smith Kline & French Pharmaceutical Company.   There she began as a lab technician and excelled as a chemist and later worked in regulatory compliance.

She was a lifetime member of Penn State Alumni, Presidents Club, and the Liberal Arts Development Council.   Her passion for helping students  gain an educational experience led she & her husband to give over 100 scholarships in the Liberal Arts College and the Eberly College of Science.

Joyce loved to travel and spent many winter months in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.   She also loved Ocean City, New Jersey where she and Charles spent many precious moments with family and friends.

Joyce will be remembered by her unconditional love and generous spirit.  Known for her deep faith and love of her Lord, she lived a grateful life filled with thankfulness & genuine concern for lives she touched.

She organized the Media Interfaith Gospel Choir concerts for many years.

As an avid reader, Joyce displayed this love by volunteering at libraries and serving as chairperson at the Riddle Retirement Home library.

She loved to shop and buy gifts for everyone.  She had a green thumb and displayed this passion by sharing her plants with others.  Joyce loved animals and was especially fond of her cats.
