Obituary

Joseph Gerald McVeigh, 74, was born November 20, 1949 to James and Helen (McCoy) McVeigh in Philadelphia. He passed away on September 7, 2024 at 5 PM at Riddle Hospital in Media, PA.

Joe graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School, Temple University (BA), and Bowling Green State University (MEd). He was a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army serving in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Combat Infantryman Badge; Bronze Star Medal W/V Device; Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device; 1 O/S Bar; and Air Medal. Joe was a member of the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, of the 1st Air Cavalry Division.

After teaching high school business at Darby Township High School, he worked in Sales and Marketing for several international companies, where he made lifelong friends throughout Europe and Africa.

Survived by his wife Mary (Friel), daughter Maureen McVeigh Trainor (Patrick), son Joseph (Tytti), his beloved grandchildren Ossian, Samuel and Freya McVeigh, and Patrick and Bridget Trainor, his sisters Mary V. McVeigh and Kathy Casey, his nieces and nephews Kathleen (Bob) McDonald, Michelle Friel, Ryan (Kari), Colin (Cory), and Amanda Irving, and Molly and Dan (Alexa) Casey; brothers-in-law Ed Friel and Dan Casey; as well as friends from Collingdale, PA; Ballston Lake, NY; East Brunswick, NJ; Landenberg, PA; and Helsinki, Finland.

He is predeceased by his parents, siblings Margaret, James and Michael, and brother-in-law Kevin Friel.

Friends and family are invited to Joe's Memorial Service in the Community Center in the Media Borough Hall on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 1-4 PM. Burial will be on October 15 at 2 PM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
