Beloved Brother, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Cousin, and Friend

Joseph Philip Contro passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of love, family, friendship, adventure, and a life lived with passion and purpose.

Joseph was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 14, 1932, to Nicoletta Bevilaqua and Joseph Contro. He spent his early childhood in Philadelphia before moving with his family to Seabrook Farms in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

After graduating from Bridgeton High School, Joseph proudly answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

Following his military service, Joseph pursued one of the great passions of his life – the theater. A gifted and accomplished actor, he performed on stages from Broadway to Philadelphia. His love for the craft extended beyond his own performances, and he later shared his talent, knowledge, and experience by teaching acting to others.

Joseph had an adventurous spirit and an insatiable curiosity about the world. An avid traveler, he journeyed far and wide, collecting not only memories but wonderful stories that he loved sharing with his family. His passion for travel eventually led him to a career in management with Liberty Travel, where he spent many years before retiring.

The arts remained an important part of Joseph's life. He was a devoted supporter of theater and an avid collector of art, classic movies, music, and Old Hollywood memorabilia. He was also a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, faithfully cheering on his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. Whether it was an evening at the theater, a classic film, a favorite piece of music, or watching his Philadelphia teams, Joseph brought tremendous enthusiasm to the things he loved. His knowledge was remarkable, but it was the joy he took in sharing his passions with others that made them so special. And, of course, everyone loved a good story from Uncle Joe.

Yet for all that Joseph accomplished and experienced during his 94 years, his greatest role was the one closest to his heart: Uncle Joe.

Though Joseph did not have children of his own, he gave a father's love to generations of his family. He was the most loving, caring, devoted, and present uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was their uncle, but he was also their best friend, confidant, mentor, and second father. That same love extended to their spouses, children, and grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Uncle Joe was there.

He never missed a birthday, a holiday, or a family gathering. He celebrated the milestones and treasured the everyday moments. He remembered what mattered. He listened. He encouraged. He laughed. He told his stories. Most importantly, he showed up - again and again, year after year - with a love that was constant and unconditional.

Joseph was the beloved patriarch of the Contro and Bevilaqua family - the glue that lovingly held everyone together. His presence brought generations together, and the traditions, memories, stories, and love he nurtured became part of the fabric of the family.

To call Joseph an extraordinary man would be an understatement.

His was a life filled with theater and art, classic movies and music, travel and adventure, Philadelphia sports, family gatherings, and wonderful stories. But what made his life truly extraordinary was the way he loved. He gave generously of himself, and the lives of those fortunate enough to know him were made richer because he was part of them.

Joseph was predeceased by his loving siblings, Anthony, Carmella, Frank, Fredrick, Lucretia, Rose, Frances, and Robert.

He is survived by his lifelong friend, Robert Hyde; his sister-in-law, Carmela Contro; and his 14 loving and eternally grateful nieces and nephews, together with their spouses, beloved children and grandchildren. He loved them beyond measure, and they will love him eternally.

Joseph also leaves behind many dear friends, cousins, and extended family members who were blessed by his friendship, his stories, his laughter, his wisdom, and his love.

The Contro and Bevilaqua family has lost its patriarch. They have lost their storyteller, their historian, their constant presence, and the man who helped keep generations connected.

But the love Joseph gave throughout his long and beautiful life did not leave with him.

It lives in every story that will be told again, every family gathering where his name will be spoken, every tradition he helped create, every lesson he passed along, and every life he touched.

For those fortunate enough to have known him - and especially for those blessed to call him Uncle Joe - his presence will never truly be gone.

He was deeply loved.

He will be profoundly missed.

And he will remain forever in the hearts of the family he so lovingly held together.
