John Ronan Fitzgerald, age 95 years, died on May 10, 2020 at Riddle Hospital. He was a resident of Riddle Village. Mr. Fitzgerald was the beloved husband of Gertrude (née MacCambridge) Fitzgerald with whom he celebrated over 70 years of marriage.  Born in Boston and raised in Dorchester, John graduated from Boston English High School before attending Boston University.

He served as an Army Air Force Navigator in WWII and, after being taken as prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 1, received a Purple Heart and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.  He became a career service member working in the Air Rescue Service in Saudi Arabia during the Korean War and as a Transport Navigator during the Vietnam War. He eventually retired from the Air Force in 1984 as Lieutenant Colonel.  Mr. Fitzgerald worked for over forty years as an engineering manager with New Eng. Tel. and Verizon.  In his free time he enjoyed swimming, flying and reading.

He was the father of Susan Thompson (Patrick) of Media, PA, and Kevin J. Fitzgerald of St. Louis, MO.  He was the grandfather of Aura Leston, Kyle Thompson, Caitlin Cornish and Erin Fitzgerald and is survived by two great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by siblings Daniel Fitzgerald of Doylestown, PA and Marie Gavin of Silver Springs, MD.

Funeral services and burial at Arlington National Cemetery will be held privately at the discretion of the family.
