Jane Denney Pollins Johnson

Jane Denney Pollins Johnson, 86, of White Horse Village, Newtown Square, PA, and a former resident of Swarthmore, PA, for 42 years, passed away on January 2, 2024, at Paoli Hospital, Paoli, PA. Born in Greensburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Elder Pollins and Frances Jane Denney Pollins.
Her education began in a one-room school house, and she was a 1955 graduate of Latrobe High School, Latrobe, PA and Penn State University in 1959.
It was at Penn State where Jane met her husband, Dave. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and majored in Home Economics (now College of Human Development).
Following graduation Jane and Dave were married in Greensburg, PA on June 13, 1959. He served in the Navy which took them to Athens, GA, Coronado, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Nantucket, MA. While Dave was overseas in Japan, Jane worked in a small department store in Coronado. When Dave finished his service in the Navy and went to work at Strawbridge & Clothier in Philadelphia, PA, they lived in Haddonfield, NJ, Springfield, PA and Swarthmore. She worked for Bamberger's department store (now Macy's), the Swarthmore College Bookstore, and Widener University as a secretary in the Center of Education, retiring in 1998.
She loved to travel, visiting all 50 states, and attended 32 Elderhostel (Road Scholar) programs. Her favorite Road Scholar programs were the Lewis and Clark and Oregon Trail journeys. She enjoyed cruising in the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Alaska, and took several cruises in Europe. Her favorite country in Europe was Ireland, where she visited five times.
Jane volunteered at the Swarthmore Public Library and the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. She was a long-time member of Swarthmore Presbyterian Church serving on the Parish Life Committee, Trustees, Shawl Ministry, and the Martha's reception committee. At White Horse Village, she served in the library and the Stall resale store. Her hobbies included needlework, knitting, and reading, and she enjoyed being with friends and family.
She was a loving and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was described by her friends as sincere, funny, loved, admirable, and wonderful.
Jane is survived by her husband, David Hallock Johnson; sons: David Hallock Johnson, Jr. (Jo Anna Hebberger), of St. Paul, MN, and Robert Emery Johnson, of Richland, WA; daughter: Karen Johnson Snowberger, of Greensboro, MD; 4 grandchildren: Andrew Cody Snowberger,(Kati), Lauren Reid Johnson, Emma Grace Johnson, and Grayson William Johnson; sister: Ann Pollins Thompson; brother: Calvin Elder Pollins, Jr.;(Mary) and nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandson, Karl Russell Snowberger, in 1991, and her sister, Virginia Pollins McCrary, in 2023.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at White Horse Village, 535 Gradyville Rd., Newtown Square, PA, in the auditorium on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Cremains interment in the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church , 727 Harvard Ave., Swarthmore, PA 19081, or Scott Arboretum , Swarthmore College, 500 College Ave., Swarthmore, PA 19081.
