Hugh P. Buchanan, Jr., a lifelong resident of Chester, Pennsylvania, and a proud United States Army veteran, passed away on March 26, 2026. Born in 1948, he lived a life defined by courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his family, faith, and community.
Hugh faithfully served in the United States Army in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. His military service was marked by bravery and sacrifice, earning him numerous distinguished honors that included: The National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. These recognitions stand as a testament to his strength, commitment, and dedication.
Following his military service, Hugh dedicated 38 years of service to the United States Postal Service, working primarily as a window clerk in Chester, Pennsylvania. Through his years of service, he became a familiar and trusted presence in the community, known for his consistency and quiet professionalism.
Born and raised in Chester, Hugh held a deep love for his city and remained a proud resident throughout his life. He was a graduate of Chester High School, Class of 1966, and carried the spirit of his hometown with him always.
After returning from military duty he then met and married Gwendolyn who preceded him in death. The two were married for 44 years. He is lovingly survived by his son, Duane, and his wife, Monique; his granddaughter, Dionne; his daughter, Angela, and her wife, Candice; and his granddaughter, Claudia.
His love and legacy live on through each of them, reflected in the lives they lead and the memories they will forever carry.
Hugh, the youngest of seven children; was preceded in death by 1 brother Herman and 4 sisters, Juanita, Marie, Olive and Barbara-Lee. He is survived by his beloved sister, Lydia. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
A man of faith, Hugh was a devoted Jehovah's Witness. His faith guided his life and provided him with strength, comfort, and perspective.
Hugh found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. He was an avid sports lover and a loyal fan of Philadelphia's home teams, especially the Eagles, Sixers, and Phillies. He also had a deep appreciation for track and field and treasured attending the Penn Relays with his family, creating lasting memories and traditions.
The last 8 years of his life was spent in The Wilmington VA Medical Hospital (CLC) where he connected with other military personnel and veterans.
Hugh P. Buchanan, Jr. will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, steady presence, and enduring love for his family, his city, and his country. His life and memory will remain a lasting presence in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Services : Hugh's funeral service will take place Saturday, April 11th, 2026 , at Rigby, Harting & Hagan Funeral Home in Media. Family & Friends may attend his visitation from 9:30 - 11:00 A.M., with his funeral service to follow at 11:00 A.M. Burial following the service at Media Cemetery.
