Hilda George, 100, of Middletown
Devoted mother, grandmother, teacher and volunteer
Hilda George, a centenarian and lifelong resident of Delaware County, died peacefully Sept. 1 at Truewood by Merrill, Glen Riddle, Middletown.
An active woman very engaged in her community, Mrs. George was a teacher, devoted mother and grandmother, avid bowler and card player, church member and volunteer with organizations from the Riddle Hospital Associated Auxiliaries to Meals on Wheels.
Mrs. George was born Hilda Catherine McGuirk on Nov. 28, 1921, the second of 12 children born to Harry and Meta Blackson McGuirk. The family moved to downtown Glen Mills in 1932. Mrs. George graduated from Media High School in 1939 and West Chester University in 1943.
She began her teaching career at the Lima School, teaching seventh grade. She was paid $1,100 plus a $300 wartime bonus. Her first week at school she broke up a fight at recess and came home with a black eye. She taught for 28 years before retiring.
She married John George in July, 1949, at Stony Bank Church, Thornbury, and they moved to their home on S. Old Middletown Road in 1951, where they raised their three sons, Steve, Ray and Jeff.
Her many volunteer activities included being secretary for a local AARP chapter, delivering Meals on Wheels, working as a member of the Associated Auxiliaries of Riddle Hospital where she volunteered in the Thrift Shop and Gift Shop, being a tour guide for the historic Minshall House, and a longtime member of Middletown Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed bowling, card games, doing counted cross stitch, jigsaw and word puzzles, Scrabble, attending her grandchildren's activities and spending time with family. She also enjoyed gardening and would often converse with her neighbors while tending her yard.
Mrs. George is predeceased by her husband, her son Raymond, sisters Myrtle, Ruth, Lorraine, Louella and brothers Morton, Robert, Harry and James.
She is survived by sons John Steven and his wife Barbara of Burlington, Vt., Jeffrey and wife Elizabeth of Middletown, daughter-in-law Lyn Martin George of Media, and grandchildren Elizabeth (Sebastian), Alex, Nicholas (Megan), Riley, Lauren (John), John, James, Catherine Ann and great-grandchildren Lucy, Mathilde and Owen. She is also survived by sisters Lillian and Eileen, brother Ray (Diane), sisters-in-law Fran and Edie and many nephews and nieces.
She also leaves behind Josephine Tozay, her devoted caregiver.
The family will hold her funeral service on Oct. 1, 2022, at Middletown Presbyterian Church, 273 S. Old Middletown Road, Media, PA. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m. and burial in the church yard. Luncheon at Concordville Inn will follow.
