Honoring A Beloved Sister & Aunt

Gwendolyn Juanita Johnson, age 71, of Drexel Hill, received her wings and transitioned peacefully into the pearly gates of heaven on December 18th, 2020.

Gwendolyn was affectionately referred to as  "Gwenny Dear" by her loved ones and friends. She was born to the late Dorothy Morton and Albert Oliver Johnson on August 22nd, 1949. She was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System and continued her education at Community College of Philadelphia and Temple University, focusing on healthcare studies. Remaining true to her calling to serve others, she dedicated over 20 years as a healthcare worker at  Intercommunity Action, Inc. in Roxborough.  At the time of her passing, she was employed at St. Joseph's Villa,  where she was a front-line healthcare worker who cared for retired priests, even knowing the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

She enjoyed watching movies such as "Anne of Green Gables", reading, caring for others and, in the later part of her life, frequenting casinos. Gwen shared an affectionate bond with all of her sisters and lived with her eldest sister for over 50 years. Gwen also shared a special bond with her nieces and nephews and assisted in rearing majority of them. Gwen was a Bonus Mother to many. She had great style and an abundance of class. But most importantly, she had a heart of gold.

Gwen was an awesome spirit who lived on her own terms and could not be easily swayed. She served as a shining light to all who knew her and loved her. Her compassion and selflessness to her family, friends, and patients were unparalleled. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of encountering her.

Gwen is survived by her beloved companion of 10 years, George Bodine.  She is also survived by her devoted sisters Charmaine Dorsey, Brenda Bayard, and Alfreda Wilson; her loving nieces and nephews Juanita Dorsey, Monica Dorsey, Norman Bayard, Tracy Nicole Haswell, David Wilson, Cher Wilson, Richard Wilson; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she affectionately referred to as her children.

Gwen is preceded in death by her parents; beloved sister, Alberta Johnson; and beloved nieces Theresa and Lisa Johnson, Ramona Sanders and Freda Wilson.

Friends and family may attend Gwendolyn's memorial service on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home, 15 E. Fourth St., Media, PA 19063.  The service will begin at 11:30 and calling hours will be from 10:30 - 11:30 am.
