Obituary

Gertrude V. Fitzgerald (nee MacCambridge), died peacefully on February 23rd at her home in Riddle Village.  She was 101 years old.

Born in Cambridge, MA to the late Elizabeth (nee Carey) and Francis MacCambridge, Gertrude spent her childhood years in Dorcester. She graduated from Boston Girls High School and Boston University. In 1942 she joined the US Marine Corps where she served in the Quartermaster Department. She was stationed in North Carolina, Boston and Washington DC before being honorably discharged as a Sargent in 1945.

Gertrude was the beloved wife of the late John Ronan Fitzgerald who preceded her in death in 2020 after 73 years of marriage.  Together they raised their daughter, Susan, and son, Kevin, in the Boston area.  Gertrude worked as a legal secretary for nearly 20 years and was very involved with her local community.  She volunteered with the Red Cross, taught CCD classes, and was very active with the Milton Women's Club.  Gertrude and John spent many years in Marco Island, FL before moving to Bethany Beach, DE, where Gertrude volunteered at St. Ann's Parish. Gertrude remained very active throughout her entire life.  She loved to travel, read, play tennis and swim.   In 2014, Gertrude moved to Riddle Village in Media, PA to be near her family.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Susan Thompson (Patrick) of Media, PA and her son, Kevin Fitzgerald of St. Louis, MO.  She is also survived by four grandchildren Aura Thompson, Kyle Thompson, Caitlin Cornish, and Erin Fitzgerald along with four great-grandchildren Patrick, Finley, Graham, and Landon.
