Elizabeth Hornaday
Fry
d. Feb 13, 2025
Elizabeth Hornaday Fry, (Betsy) age 99, a former and longtime resident of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, died on February 13, at White Horse Village in Newtown Square. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Edna Hornaday, her husband Robert Fry, her son Jimmy, and her brother Jim Hornaday.
Betsy was born in 1925 and moved with her parents to Swarthmore as a young child. Her brother and sister "the twins" Alice and Jim, were born when she was four and remained close to her throughout her life. Betsy graduated from Swarthmore High School. She was active in the Swarthmore Players Club during her high school years. She went on to attend Middlebury College in Vermont where she graduated in 1947 with a degree in sociology. She learned to ski in Vermont and later met her husband-to-be, Bob Fry, on a Philadelphia Outing Club ski trip. Bob and Betsy were married in 1949 and moved to Swarthmore to raise their family in 1951.
Spending time at the family's Cloud Hill Farm in the Pocono Mountains was a favorite activity for many years. Bob and Betsy shared this country retreat with their family and many friends. After Bob retired, they enjoyed traveling to Europe. Switzerland was a favorite destination. One of Betsy's goals was to greet the twenty first century from the top of a mountain to celebrate surviving breast cancer. She and Bob did indeed see in the year 2000 at a New Year's Eve party atop a mountain in Switzerland.
Throughout her life, Betsy was a committed volunteer, working for the Girl Scouts, the Ladies Aid Society of Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia, in the classrooms of Swarthmore and Rose Valley schools and volunteering in many capacities at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church. She continued her volunteer work at Whitehorse Village in the library and by writing for the community newsletter after she and Bob moved there in 1996.
Betsy was a woman of strong opinions and always believed in the value of "connections" to family and friends. Betsy called herself a "kin-keeper". She read widely and corresponded with many friends around the world. Music, photography, and gardening were also important to her. She won prizes at the county fair for her photographs and flower arrangements. Betsy sang for years in the choir at church and continued singing with the Whitehorse Village Singers until only months before her death. The Swarthmore Presbyterian Church was a mainstay in her life. She was baptized, confirmed, married and her ashes will rest there where she was a parishioner for almost one hundred years.
Betsy is survived by three of her four children Lynn Fry Agnew (Bill), Rob Fry (Lise), and Ted Fry. She also leaves her sister Alice Gerety, her sister-in-law Ann Hornaday, five grandchildren, and one great grandson as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church at 11:00am on May 31st. Donations to support the maintenance of the gardens at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church (727 Harvard Avenue Swarthmore, PA 19081) may be sent in lieu of flowers.
