Obituary

Doris E. McGovern, of Media, Pennsylvania passed away after a lengthy illness on December 29, 2025 at age 80.

Doris was born July 2, 1945 in Long Island, New York to Henry and Alice Nordmeier.   She married Pat McGovern on September 22, 1973 and they lived in the Philadelphia region since that time.   She worked at the University of  Pennsylvania for a number of years but her passion was birding.  She was the guiding force behind the Rushton Bird Banding Station from its very beginning .   She joined the project as a consultant in 2008  with a grant from the Delaware Valley Ornithology Club (DVOC).  She was a Master bander and studied and banded Purple Martins at Glen Mills and lent her banding credentials to many other locations.  In 2022, DVOC honored Doris with the DEVOC award which recognizes an individual for his/her outstanding contributions to ornithology and exemplifies the spirit of the Founders and upholds the prestige which was established for the Club.  Doris will be missed by many as a teacher and a mentor who generously shared her love of birds with many.

She is survived by her brother-in-law George McGovern and his wife, Jeanette, of Berea, Ohio, and her two nieces, Michele and Christina.   She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Pat McGovern earlier this year.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
