Obituary

Claire Dowdy McGeehan died at her home in Media on March 12, 2022 after an 18 month fight against breast cancer. She was born on March 16, 1949, and raised in Cumberland, Virginia by her parents, Carroll and Carrie Putney Dowdy.

Claire graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1972, and spent her career as a teacher - first at Everglades Middle School in Davie, Florida, then at Penn Wynne Elementary School and Bala Cynwyd Middle School in Lower Merion School District. She spent the last 15 years of her teaching career and retired from Media Elementary School. She also cherished the 12 years she spent at home raising her youngest 3 children.

She was a longtime board member at Media Fellowship House, and a passionate advocate for racial and social justice. She loved baking creative cakes, designing costumes for productions at Penncrest High School, reading & discussing with her book group, researching her family's genealogy, caring for her grandchildren, and especially traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie McGeehan, Jr. and is survived by her children Charlie McGeehan III, Carrie Stolarski, Colleen McGeehan, & Courtney Holt Burgan, and her grandchildren Sebastian Schaffer McGeehan, Mikayla Stolarski, & Tyler Stolarski. She is also survived by her siblings Cliff Dowdy and Claudia Reed, and her sister-in-law Elizabeth Ringlaben.
