Charlotte
Giblin
Aug 20, 1931 — Feb 17, 2025
Charlotte, "Lottie", Giblin died peacefully on February 17, 2025.
Lottie was the only child of Charles and Ruth Witler and was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. Lottie graduated from Notre Dame Prep High School in 1949 and received her Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Delaware in 2000. In between her graduation from Notre Dame and the University of Delaware, Lottie married Thomas Giblin in 1958, became a mother of five and grandmother of nine.
Growing up in Baltimore, Lottie enjoyed business trips with her father Charles to Washington D.C. and New York City where she eventually became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as well as family trips to Atlantic City, which portended the time she would spend at the Jersey Shore as an adult. Her marriage took her to Middletown, NJ, where she would make daily trips to Driftwood Beach Club with five children in tow, to Rochester, NY, where she briefly learned to ski, to Wilmington DE where she lived for thirty two years and regularly made trips to Stone Harbor NJ, and eventually across the border to Glen Mills, PA where she has lived for the last seventeen years at Maris Grove. Wherever Lottie lived she always made new friends and found different things to do. However, she never forgot her old friends and she found great joy in her later years being able to connect with friends from her childhood, Middletown, Rochester, or Wilmington.
Lottie had a great love of learning which only burned brighter as she aged and included going to college in her sixties to get a Bachelor of Arts degree. Even after getting her Bachelor's degree, she continued to take courses through the University of Delaware up until just the last year or two. Her education was not limited to the classroom, as she loved to travel and see new things and meet new people. Beyond learning, one of Lottie's other joys was riding her bike which he did into her nineties. Lottie could be seen tootling around the neighborhoods of Fairfax and Woodbrook in Wilmington or around Maris Grove. As her eyesight failed, she could be found peddling in her kitchen while reading a book. Lottie also had a fondness for dogs, and they for her, dating back to her childhood. Most notably she somehow connected with the gentler side of the family's first dog, a Miniature Schnauzer named Harvey, who in all manners punched above his weight.
Lottie's true love were her children and grandchildren. She took great care in guiding her children, sometimes gently and other times firmly, encouraging and supporting them to pursue their dreams and interests even if it meant turning to her stable of saints to pray for their success and protection. She was a wonderful grandmother who loved to spend time playing with her grandchildren, whether it was with the extensive collection of Brio trains she acquired on trips to Zainy Brainy with them, walking down to the creek, or flying kites at the beach. She spent countless hours making them blankets, Christmas ornaments or even clothes for their Barbies. As her grandchildren became adults she took great pleasure and interest in their academic pursuits, careers and especially their travel. Her willingness to embrace technology and stay current with the world allowed her to maintain these connections even though her children and grandchildren were hundreds or even thousands of miles away.
Lottie was kind and gracious, loved to laugh, had a sharp wit, enjoyed following sports of all kinds (especially men's college basketball where she religiously completed her NCAA bracket even winning a few times) knew what she liked and who she liked and was not afraid to let you know. Lottie volunteered countless hours from the kitchen ladies at St. Mary Magdalen in Wilmington Delaware, to the Emmanuel Dining Room, Habitat for Humanity, Hagley Museum, Winterthur Museum, Brandywine Museum of Art, and Longwood Gardens to name just a few.
While she could be stubborn, she more often was open to do something new or adapt to changes in her life. She was great fun to be around and will truly be missed.
Lottie is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Witler and Ruth Phillips Witler, and her husband Thomas Giblin. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer and sons Christopher (Lia), Gary (Sally), David (Julie), and Thomas (Kelly), and grandchildren Madelyn, Meredith, Peter (Kelsey), Noah, Jack (Jess), Ariana (Paul), Sam, Jeremy and Astrid.
Contributions, if you wish, can be made to the Ministry of Caring of Delaware or Maris Grove Scholars' Fund.
Christopher, Gary, David, Thomas and Jennifer wish to gratefully thank family and dear friends for their support and love this past year as well as thank staff members at Maris Grove and Willow Tree Hospice Services who cared for Lottie these past six months who showed kindness and provided comfort to Lottie during this time.
