Obituary

Brenda Cline, Psychologist Long-time Swarthmore resident, Brenda Cline, died on Friday April 24 of complications due to a hemorrhagic stroke. She is survived by her sons Alex and Evan, both graduates of Strath Haven High School, as well as by her mother Isabel Kelly of Toms River NJ, her sisters Linda Kelly (also of Toms River) and Karla Johnson of Chesapeake City VA. Dr. Cline grew up in a military family and moved much of her childhood until the family settled in San Antonio TX. There she attended Trinity University, received a Bachelor's Degree and, after considering a call to Ministry, went on to a Master's Degree in psychology. She subsequently moved to Nashville to pursue her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at George Peabody College. She came to Philadelphia in 1974 to complete a Psychology Internship at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic that specialized in family therapy. She stayed on at Child Guidance and served in a variety of clinical, supervisory and administrative capacities until the Clinic closed in 1998. She then moved on to clinical and supervisory positions at Elwyn Institute and Advanced Behavioral Care in Media. Dr. Cline has held faculty appointments at the Family Institute of Philadelphia, in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and in the Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University. Her colleagues remember her as a focused, clear-headed and compassionate clinician and teacher, an advocate for the best interests of her clients and students. Dr. Cline enjoyed travel and the arts. She traveled a great deal before adopting Alex and Evan and later delighted in presenting them with travel adventures. She enjoyed theatre, film, reading, music and dance, both classical ballet and contemporary dance. She herself line-danced for a number of years and more recently enjoyed dancing salsa, West Coast Swing, and tango. Dr. Cline was a member of Christ Church in Old City while she lived in Philadelphia and has been a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Swarthmore for the past thirty years. She has been active there in the Sunday School and on the Outreach Committee and, most recently, in the Thrift Shop. A memorial service will honor Dr. Cline at Trinity Episcopal Church on Chester Road and College Avenue in Swarthmore at 2:00 PM on Sunday May 3.
