Betty
Roe
Apr 3, 1931 — Apr 6, 2026
Betty Roe (née Elizabeth Catherine Lynch), a unique woman of indomitable spirit, devoted wife, mother, and beloved "Mom Mom," was called to heaven on April 6, 2026—just three days after celebrating her 95th birthday. She is the cherished wife of Peter "Pete" Roe, with whom she shared 71 years of joyful shenanigans and enduring love—an extraordinary partnership admired by all who knew them. Betty is survived by her five deeply grateful children: Elise (John) Sutton, Peter (Julianne) Roe, Renee (John) Welde, Patrice (Tony) Scalpato, and Michelle (Bill) Fleming. She is the adored and proud "Mom Mom" of 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, each one held close in her heart and lifted by her love.
Betty often said, "Life is a celebration"—and celebrate she did. She found joy in birthdays and holidays, in happy hours after long work weeks, and in sun-soaked days at the beach with Pete, her children, family, and friends. She had the gift—the rare and radiant gift of wisdom, kindness, and unconditional love—shining through her sparkling blue eyes and unmistakable smile. From West Catholic Girls High School, Class of 1949, to Sacred Heart parish in Manoa - with stops along the way in Ship Bottom, Sea Isle, and Cape May, Betty lived a life rooted in faith, service, laughter, and joy.
With an unshakable faith in God, Betty had a song for everything—and she sang it! At just 22 years old, she boarded a steamship to Germany alone—an extraordinary act of courage for a young woman at the time—to be reunited with her husband while he served in the Army during the Korean War. A world traveler, devoted choir member for decades, director and performer in parish variety shows, and an active member of the Catholic War Veterans, Betty brought light, peace, and love wherever she went.
She was graceful, honest and wholehearted. A Cape May gardener, voracious reader, dedicated body surfer, clothes horse, peacemaker, letter writer, showgirl, and true lover of life—Betty moved through the world with an elegance and ease that made her presence unforgettable. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. When once asked, "Mom, what would you want your obituary to say?" She smiled and answered, "She got by with a twinkle in her eye."
