Betty Gordon Becton of Media, Pennsylvania passed away at home on September 17th, 2024.
Betty was the daughter of Robert and Nora Naylor Gordon and is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Hannah, son Steven Allen Becton, son-in-law Harry Hannah, daughter-in-law Laura Becton and grandchildren Ryan, Aidan and Hope Becton. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Becton.
Born in Christiana, Tennessee in 1934, Betty graduated from the University of Tennessee with an undergraduate degree in teaching and then moved to the Philadelphia area with her husband, Allen, where they would spend their lives together A lifelong teacher and librarian, Betty began her career as a junior high school English teacher at Beverly Hills Junior High School in Upper Darby, PA. In 1978, Betty resumed her career as a librarian at the Delaware County Campus of Penn State University. While at working at Penn State, Betty co-authored "At Ease With The ERA" a book dedicated to demystifying the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to the constitution. She later received her Masters Degree in Library Sciences from Villanova University and began a 15 year career as the head Librarian at Wallingford Elementary School in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. Throughout her life, Betty was an unapologetically passionate supporter of the Democratic Party and women's rights issues.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Betty placed family at the center of her life. She had a boundless amount of love and energy for family and had unique and fulfilling relationships with every member of her family. Of her husband, Allen, she often would simply summarize her relationship with Allen as being blessed with being married to the greatest husband of all time. Betty will be missed dearly by her family.
A memorial service for Betty will be held on October 4th at 11:00 AM at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in Betty's memory be made to the Wallingford Community Arts Center ( https://communityartscenter.org ).
