Anita Whitaker
Johnson
d. Sep 2, 2025
Anita Whitaker Johnson, age 80, a resident of Wallingford, PA, died peacefully on September 2, 2025. Anita was the beloved wife of the late Alfred Johnson and daughter of the late William and Marie Whitaker. She was a devoted mother, sister, aunt and friend.
A graduate of Media High School, class of 1963, Anita went on to attend Lake Forest College where she majored in American Studies and obtained her bachelor's degree in 1967. She worked in insurance education with the Insurance Institute of America for nearly forty years. Working in the idyllic setting of Chester County's horse country was something she never took for granted. Throughout her time with the company, Anita obtained a master's degree from Villanova and the title CPCU, chartered property casualty underwriter, steadily working her way to Director of Examination.
Anita was as smart as they come – an avid reader, expert scrabbler, crossword aficionado, wordsmith, trivia maven with a specialty for Jeopardy. She was sophisticated and a class act, yet she was grounded and genuine. Her personality was as gentle as it was feisty. Anita was loyal, loyal, loyal.
Dedicated to her friends, family and community, Anita was a lifelong Girl Scout, served as president of A Better Chance Strath Haven, was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, and was a board member of the Community Arts Center. She was a generous and charitable philanthropist.
Anita loved classic rock especially Meatloaf, Bob Seeger, Elton John, and Simon and Garfunkle. She was a known foodie and had a great appreciation for design. She kept in touch with her high school classmates, lately through Zoom. While resolute and determined when it mattered, Anita never took life too seriously. Her life was filled with quick-witted banter and belly laughter.
Anita was preceded in death by her sister, Gail Whitaker. She is survived by her sons Michael David Johnson (Madeline) of Newark, DE and Andrew William Johnson (Amy) of Wallingford, PA; her loving grandchildren; her brother William T. Whitaker (Teresita) of Harlem, NY; a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many lifelong friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 11th at 1:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County, 145 W. Rose Tree Rd. Media, PA 19063.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to A Better Chance Strath Haven c/o ABC Strath Haven, P.O. Box 495, Swarthmore, PA 19081 . abcstrathhaven.org
