Obituary

Angela Hewett (née Peckham), a longtime resident of Wallingford, PA, was born in Ann Arbor, MI to Howard and Dorothy (Koth) Peckham. Howard was an author and historian, employed as Director of the Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Growing up in this environment inspired two of Angela's life-long loves, American history and UMich football.

She attended Hanover College in Indiana, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in 1963 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, an international women's fraternity and the first Greek organization for women. The Thetas subsequently sponsored her attendance at the University of Utah for the purpose of organizing a new chapter there. She found full-time employment with the university as a Student Activities Adviser and completed a Master's degree. It was there she met her future husband, Thomas Hewett, a Utah native completing his degree following his term of service in the U.S. Army Special Forces.

Angela and Thomas married in 1968 and started their lives together in Urbana, IL where Tom pursued an advanced degree at the University of Illinois. Angela was employed there as the Panhellenic Dean, making use of her experiences with the Thetas, Greek organizations, and campus life.

Angela transitioned to a new phase of her life a few years later with the birth of a daughter, Kathryn. After Tom completed his PhD, he accepted employment as a Professor of Psychology with Drexel University and the family relocated to the Philadelphia suburbs. Initially residing in Narberth, PA, the family expanded with the birth of a son, Eric, and put down permanent roots in Wallingford, PA, where they welcomed a second son, David.

Angela's love of American history, sparked at a young age thanks to her father, combined with her love of education, led her to volunteer extensively with the Friends of the Thomas Leiper house, the non-profit organization that manages the Revolutionary-War-era Thomas Leiper estate and museum near her home in Nether Providence Township. She developed tours and programs for the public and soon assumed the presidency of this organization, a position she held for over four decades. She conducted research on Thomas Leiper and his family (including his correspondence with Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson and James Madison), curated and expanded the collections of the museum, and organized many public education programs. In addition, Angela held founding and leadership positions with other volunteer organizations that reflected her passion for historical preservation and education, such as Nether Providence Historical Society and Delaware County Historical Society.  She was involved, too, with organizations that encouraged women's leadership and education, such as Girl Scouts of America, Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni, and PEO Sisterhood. Angela was honored for her years of service in historical preservation in 2019 by the Delaware County Historical Society with the A. Lewis Smith Award and in 2024 by the Heritage Commission of Delaware County with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Angela is survived by her children, Kathryn Giorgianni of Lansdale, PA, Eric Hewett (Anna) of Hörbranz, Austria, David Hewett (Kristen) of Philadelphia, PA and twelve grandchildren, ages 1 to 21; and her brother Stephen Peckham (Dina) of Lexington, KY. She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Dorothy Peckham; her husband, Thomas Hewett; and her son-in-law, Frank Giorgianni.

Angela's memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 15th, 2026 at Rigby, Harting & Hagan Funeral Home. There will be a visitation from 1:00-2:00 P.M, followed by the service at 2:00 PM.
