Alice Jane Nuffer Herbert, daughter of the late G. Russell Nuffer, Jr. and Mary J. Nuffer of Craigsville, VA, passed away September 27, 2022. Survivors include her son, Russell (Rusty) Herbert of Awandaw, SC; daughter, Cynthia Herbert of Media, PA; and grandchildren, Russell, Samantha, and Asa Herbert. Alice is also survived by her siblings, all of whom live in Virginia: Sandra Volkstorf (Ed) of Charlottesville; Gail Martin (Buddy) of Afton; Curney Nuffer of Richmond; Vicky Lewis (Randall) of Craigsville; and Stephen Nuffer of Craigsville. Alice leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom cherish her whimsical, wonderful, often wacky sense of humor and style.

Alice was perpetual motion. A hurricane. A terrific woman who championed the underdog, hated injustice, and didn't suffer fools. She had a quick wit and an undeniable propensity to protect the vulnerable and lift up those who needed a soft word or sometimes a swift kick in the pants. Her unwavering love for her family and close friends is something they will forever hold dear. In her own colorful way, knowing that her fight with bone cancer was waning, she wrote, "I want what I want; don't piss me off!"

Her last wishes included a desire to have a celebration of life with her ashes present on 4th Street, where her late husband, Richard Herbert's, service was held in 2005. Ever the optimist, with a smile on her beautiful face, Alice wrote of her passing to her children and grandchildren, "If I'm up, I will look down. If I'm down, I will look up. Hopefully, I'll be looking down. Love, Mom and Granny."

Her very last request was that no one wear black to her service. And no tears, please!

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Alice's life on Tuesday, October 4th at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home in Media.  There will be a visitation from 3-4:00 pm followed by a service at 4:00 pm.
