Albert G.
Armour
d. Aug 1, 2023
1934-2023
Albert G. Armour, 88, passed away at Bryn Mawr Hospital on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
Albert (Al) was born in 1934, the second son to the late William Adolph Armour and late Gertrude Louise Unverricht. Throughout his father's career with Reynolds Metals, Al lived his childhood years in St Louis, MO, Richmond, VA, and Dover, NH. Al graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, VA in 1951 at the age of 16. His family then moved to Dover, NH, which is where Al met his future bride, Andrea Wentworth. They were married in 1960. During their courtship, Al graduated from University of New Hampshire with a B.S. degree in Chemistry (1955), followed by a M.S. degree (1956) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from M.I.T. (1960). In October 1959, he joined DuPont as a research chemist at Marshall Lab in Philadelphia. From 1977 through 1983, he relocated to Belgium with his family when he became the Director of DuPont's Mechelen Research Lab. He returned to Philadelphia's Marshall Lab as Director in 1987, and retired from DuPont in 1992. Following his retirement from DuPont, Al served as Project Director at the University of Pennsylvania. He then returned to DuPont part-time as a Safety Consultant serving large corporations across the world including those located in Asia, South Africa, and Australia, where he developed several friendships. He permanently retired in 2004.
Al loved to travel and all aspects of food – from growing, cooking, eating, to sharing. He valued relationships with others, and routinely met with and corresponded with a myriad of family and friends. He was active in First United Methodist Church in Media. He enjoyed watching sports ranging from golf to college football, particularly the Phillies and the Eagles.
Al was devoted to his family and loved sharing his favorite hobbies with his children and grandchildren. He spent many days golfing with his wife in Lake Naomi, skiing, swimming, fishing, playing cards, and building puzzles with his grandchildren, and conversing with his extended family while sitting on the porch at the family beach house in York, ME.
Al is survived by his wife of 63 years, Andrea Wentworth Armour, along with his two children – Eric (Kate) Armour of Pennington, NJ and Andrew (Linda) Armour of Swarthmore, PA, four grandchildren – Ellen, Peter, Sarah, and Edward Armour, and his brother, Bill (Alice) Armour of Tucson, AZ.
A Memorial Service for Al will be held at 11 am on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church of Media, 350 W. State St, Media, PA. A luncheon in the church's fellowship hall will immediately follow the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the First United Methodist Church of Media.
